Poinsettia Garden is a small, private garden in West Hollywood, California. The front garden includes a restorative koi pond, panels of brilliantly colored glass. and an exuberant mix of planting.

Planting provides layered experience to the small space, and helps define distinct rooms.

This is a small urban garden that had fallen into disrepair 15 years after its original installation, I was asked to rethink the space. The design utilizes a streamlined plant palette to create uniformity and a clear sense of a room. Species were carefully selected to give the space a sense of drama. A grove of 25’ bamboo creates an enclosure around a flat field of gravel and highlights the simple form of the 100-year-old London plane tree.

If you plan to entertain groups, keep the furniture and plantings along the perimeter of the garden to allow for mingling in the center of the space.
