Pep Ventosa's Trees In the Round
Pep Ventosa's tree portraits are composed of multiple photographs, shot as he circles the subject. In this slide show, Ventosa tells us a bit more about his series "In the Round - Trees," his painting-like images of trees around the world.
Pep Ventosa's tree portraits are composed of multiple photographs, shot as he circles the subject. Catalonia-born Ventosa photographs trees in cities around the world, then superimposes the different views to produce images that read like paintings. Many capture the spirit of the city (a blur of bicycles in Barcelona or cars in New York City), while others render the background a soft texture that could be anywhere. In all of them, the tree becomes the most prominent part of the landscape. In this slideshow, Ventosa tells us a bit more about the series "In the Round - Trees."
Carrer de Tantarantana, One
Artist's note: "Trees in urban areas are surrounded by buildings, cars, storefronts and human activity in a way that they almost disappear: we don't see them. I make the tree the center of attention in those environments."
Location: Barcelona
New York, Three
Artist's note: "Whatever is around it becomes the spirit of the place, but not the main thing. Somehow it's like [giving] the tree the leading role in those otherwise very complex environments."
Location: New York
Washington Square Park, One
Artist's note: "I actually began the 'In The Round' project shooting carousels while walking around them. Because I loved the results, I imagined trees would be also a great subject because they have a similar shape from all of their angle."

Artist's note: "The project is still ongoing and so far includes trees from California, specially from the San Francisco Bay Area, New York City, Barcelona, Berlin, and Prague."
