Co-owner and Miami Hot designer Steve Smith teamed up with Lisa Mullins nearly three years ago to purchase the foundering Kentucky institution. "We're working hard to preserve the tradition," says Smith, who also embraces bringing new designs to market, such as this asymmetrical bowl inspired by a trip to Miami.

Natural stoneware clay, as old as 250 million years, is harvested from deposits in Kentucky and Indiana.

Once the clay is brought in from the mines, the process of creating functional art begins at the Louisville Stoneware studios.

Skilled artisans design and shape each custom piece; these hand-formed pieces then go to their an for glazing, hand painting and signing.

With finishing touches complete, the stoneware is placed into a 2350-degree kiln for a sixteen hour firing cycle. The extended firing time and high temperatures produces a one-of-a-kind piece that will last for decades.

Louisville Stoneware crafted and sold its first piece in 1815. The company's container offerings started with a pinched rim, pie-crust pot introduced in the late 1800s.

Pie Crusts: The Louisville Pottery started making stoneware pie crust pots in the late 1800's. Their frost proof pots are still made by twenty-two sets of hands and come in mutiple sizes and color ways.
