New York City Gardens Worth Exploring
Garden Design's self-guided day trip to three of NYC's most-loved gardens
To be fair, in order to really do justice to all three of these gardens we recommend staying overnight in the Big Apple and spreading your adventure over a couple of days. There is so much to see!
But if you only have limited time, Jan recommends starting your day at the world-famous New York Botanical Garden, accessible by train or subway if you prefer not to drive. You could easily spend a full day here alone but if you can tear yourself away, head just a little farther north to Wave Hill, a remarkable public garden which Jan describes as a “garden lovers dream.”
If you’re returning to the City, take an evening stroll along the famous High Line, an elevated walkway designed by Piet Oudolf that will give you a bird’s eye view of both the street life below and the skyscrapers above. Alternatively, the High Line may be less busy early in the morning.
