Outstanding Gardens of Austin, Texas
Garden Design's self-guided day trip to 3 unique Central Texas gardens.
With over 250 music venues and a vibrant arts scene, Austin is rightly known as the live music capital of the world, the city to watch over a million Mexican free-tail bats take flight at dusk from the Congress Avenue Bridge, and the place to go for the best Central Texas style BBQ - but did you also know it has several outstanding public gardens?
Local landscape designer Diana Kirby suggests a fun-packed day exploring three of her favorites, starting at the renowned Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, which perfectly marries education and inspiration. From here, you’ll head to the heart of Austin and the Zilker Botanical Garden before visiting the historic Mayfield Park and Preserve, managed by volunteers and presided over by the resident peacocks.
Along the way, you’ll discover an owl roost and an ornithomimus dinosaur, a Japanese garden and Riparian stream beds, lily ponds, and an open-air lending library for children. One thing is for sure, this will be a fun, varied, and memorable day trip.
