Sarah Hutchinson is a content and SEO professional who has been working for Garden Design since 2013. She writes on topics in the outdoor living, landscaping, and gardening fields.

She lives and gardens in sunny Southern California. Her garden is filled with low-maintenance shrubs and perennials since she is always busy with her three young daughters. Her favorite thing about her garden is the mature trees that were planted over 50 years ago and provide shade, structure and a place for her kids to swing.

Here are some other things she loves:

  • Tending her potted tomatoes each morning before work
  • Hanging up hummingbird feeders and watching the energetic birds dart around
  • Finding the first bird of paradise flower that unfurls near her back fence
  • Watching her girls pretend their playhouse is a ship sailing through the sea
  • Enjoying a yummy meal with friends and family cooked by her husband on the grill
  • Watching the Agapanthus explode like fireworks just before July 4th
  • Hanging out on the patio near her potted olive trees that offer a Mediterranean vibe
  • Growing houseplants that bring a bit of the outdoors inside
  • Camping with her family and exploring National Parks

She was first introduced to gardening by her mom, who she watched create a garden from scratch. Slowly their bare dirt lot was transformed into a lush, inviting landscape complete with a flower border, large kitchen garden and fruit trees.

By watching this process, she learned how challenging gardening can be. Wildlife interferes, trees get destroyed by invasive mistletoe, and so on. But, despite setbacks, she discovered that gardening is incredibly rewarding and full of life lessons and enjoyment.
